Philanthropic Organizations:
Mi Raza The Mi Raza Community Center is a resource center for the Hispanic/Latino population of Douglas County. Mi Raza is a place where individuals can go to get information about health issues, jobs, WIC, LINC, translation, vehicle safety, child care, and is also a place where those individuals who have newly arrived to Douglas County area can go for necessary information needed for setting up a household. Free access to the Internet is also available.
The center is designed to accommodate people for meetings, health education and intervention, socializing and much more. Free English classes, U.S. citizenship exam preparation classes and assistance with the GED exam preparation are available. Free and confidential HIV testing and counseling are also available.
Mi Raza benefits the entire community. It is a place as well as a resource for many people __families, individuals, children, teens, parents, employers, day care providers, churches and those needing a church home, students and those who can help them, health care providers and those in need of health care, as well as other important needs.
Mi Raza is a family-oriented center that has a play area for children, sitting area for teens and parents to watch television or a movie, and a quiet study area for students to complete homework and get tutoring.
The Arcola Foundation The Arcola Foundation is a trust fund created by individual gifts or bequests under wills and administered as a whole for the benefit of educational, charitable or benevolent enterprises in the community. Local worthy causes supported by the Foundation over the years include:
A $1 million commitment to the Arcola Community School district for its $7 million building addition project.
The purchase of the building that now houses the Arcola Center to transform the building in to a senior citizens center/community building.
A $400,000 commitment to the Arcola Public Library for its building addition project.
Disbursements of scholarships over the years which have allowed many deserving students who are committed to the pursuit of academic and professional excellence to achieve their dreams. Nearly 20 scholarships are administered by the Foundation.
