Vibrant small communities all over America usually share one common trait: a school system which has been – and continues to be – a source of pride for the town and its residents. Arcola is a prime example of the small-town vibrance/education education excellence correlation.
Since the first class graduated from Arcola High School in 1881, thousands of students have received their diplomas from AHS. Now, over 100 years after that first class became the school’s first alumni, the Arcola school district is operating in a position of strength and renewed optimism. A new $6.5 million addition complete with a 500-seat gymnasium with stage, science classrooms, locker rooms, a fitness center, a media center, several additional classrooms and a computer lab have enabled the school district and its educators to offer a more effective learning experience to Arcola students. The new addition was made possible in large part because of enviable support from the community.
Arcola schools offer a wide range of educational and extracurricular opportunities for it’s students. The district’s Statement of Philosophy reads “ We believe we should create within the child a desire and respect for learning. Each child should be encouraged and motivated to think clearly, logically, creatively and independently. He should also develop communication skills which will enable him to express himself in both an oral and written manner.” To expedite this philosophy, the school district has embarked on a long-term project to get new textbooks in the hands of its students by committing $75,000 per year at the elementary, junior high and high school levels to purchase new textbooks.
One of the biggest assets of the Arcola school district its diverse student population, a benefit and opportunity quite unique to a small town. In 2006, 63% of the school’s enrollment was Caucasian, while 36% were of Hispanic origin. As a result, the school board has made a financial commitment to providing additional resources.
Athletics is a tradition in Arcola. The Purple Rider football program has generated three state championships as well as three runner-up finishes. The school boasts a girl’s basketball coach who is among the state’s all-time leaders in career coaching wins. Moreover, the Arcola softball team from 2007 set a school record in wins for a season and also advanced to the sectional title game.
